The Eighth Season ended with the winners giving a superior, positive, artistic extension to the theme ‘Hope’. This brings us to the launch of our Ninth Season for all photographers around the world under the theme ‘Water’, which is woven into the very fabric of human history since the beginning of time..

is the synonym of life and has been at the heart of everything we do. Without water there is no life.

Last season, ‘Aerial Photography - Video’ category was a pleasant surprise for photographers that were eager to keep up with the latest trends and developments in the photographic industry. The winning works were hugely celebrated amongst the community. This season we are even closer to daily life with the inclusion of the ‘Mobile Photography’ category to give everyone the opportunity to compete and win in the Award.

For the fourth year in a row, the ‘Portfolio’ category returns. This category once again demonstrated its strength, with some of the most fascinating submissions in the previous edition of HIPA. Likewise, the ‘General’ category returns and is set to delve into the creative minds of photographers, affording them a full remit to express themselves through ‘Black and White’ or ‘Colour’ submissions

WATER

Water may be the oldest and the perfect companion of humankind. Not only is our bodies predominantly made of water, but water is a necessity within our daily lives. From nature to nurture to science and discovery; water is central to our universe.

Photography not only photographs the present, but in time creates a rich archive of the past and even inspires the imagination for the future. Water as a theme provides an endless and provocative subject that captures the photographer’s imagination and inspires an opportunity for photographic brilliance and storytelling.

General

This category remains a favourite among photographers who have an outstanding eye for photography which may not necessarily fall into any of the other categories on offer.

HIPA continues to offer participants two opportunities to participate in this category, instead of one. With one category open to black and white entries, a classic art form, and the other for coloured entries, giving participants the option to dazzle the jury with their vibrant compositions. For all the technical specifications for submissions and specific rules for this category

PORTFOLIO (STORY-TELLING)

The Portfolio category returns to afford photographers the chance to showcase their storytelling skills through a series of photographs. A strong photographic story delves into the heart of a subject matter and leaves no margin for misinterpretation. A portfolio of photographs allows photographers to capture the hearts and minds of audiences in a way which may not be possible through a single photograph.

MOBILE PHOTOGRAPHY

What is most beautiful is to give the opportunity to compete and win for all people. Mobile photography has become a natural companion in our lives and has evolved over the years to provide a formidable tool that has captured our imagination.

This category keeps pace with the global trend and the millions of images that mobile phones take daily for sharing, recording, discovery and dozens of other purposes.

Silent Kingdom

“Every since I was a kid, as far back as I can remember, I was attracted to the sea. I dreamt about what lay beneath the waves, and how would it look if suddenly all the water vanished, leaving in stasis all the animals and living creatures. In this way, I could walk inside the ocean and see them all, suspended for a moment in time and space. I have devoted my life to exploring and contemplate the amazing beauty of the ocean and it has been an incredible journey that has brought me a deep feeling of connection with nature, but sadly during my lifetime I have witness the ever-increasing devastation that we humans are creating in this planet. Today the world’s Ocean is in grave danger. Overfishing, pollution, plastics, radiation, climate change, acidification and other human pressures threaten the fundamental nature of the ocean and it´s animals are being pushed to near extinction. The time to act and reverse our negative impact is now, before it´s too late risking loosing everything. The majority of humans see marine animals merely as tons of food, but I see them as so much more than that. They don´t have a voice that we can understand, so the higher purpose of my images is to be a voice of the ocean and for the ocean, hoping that people can get a glimpse of who they really are, beautiful sentient individuals, with feelings and different personalities, with complex behaviors and interesting lives that science is only starting to understand. I believe Photography is capable of real service to humanity, promoting empathy and initiating change, so my main purpose as a photographer is to create poetic images showing the incredible beauty of these animals knowing they carry the power of changing our perception and spark the love and empathy that we all have inside. If we want to have a future in this planet, we need to understand that our lives are interconnected to all living animals, and our own well being is directly linked to the well being of these animals. As Dr. Sylvia Earl stated, “No blue no green, if the oceans die, we die”

The Predator's Fins

Shark has been known as a wild predator as seen in 1975 Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. The thriller shows how wild this snout-headed animal is. Shark represents a killing machine in the top of marine food chain. But, not nowadays, since the 90s, the population of this superordo selachimorpa creature has decreasing especially the black-fin shark (carcharhinus melanopterus). Based on research, hundreds of millions of sharks are killed every year; most is for its fin. Even though shark relies on its fin to travel across the ocean around the world. What makes it worse is that the slowed-productivity and maturity is not directly proportional with the rate of exploitation of this cold-blooded mammal. A bowl of Shark Fin Soup costs about 900,000 rupiah, which is a prestige and special menu in luxury restaurant. It has been said that it can cure diseases although in fact, it contains methyl mercury that is dangerous to be consumed. Indonesia was ranked first in the list of shark’s exporter internationally. Conservation efforts in the form of regulation are less clear in this country. Lack of awareness of understanding the role of sharks is a major threat to marine life. The decreasing shark populations, increasingly threatening marine life. Marine food chain in chaotic, uncontrolled and damaging ecosystems, which will obviously give negative consequences in the future. “Bad men live that they may eat and drink, whereas good men eat and drink that they may live.”, Socrates, (470-399 SM)

IN THE MIDDLE OF BLACK CHRISTIANITY

“In the Middle of Black Christianity” is a photographic project made in few years in the Tigray Region, located in the northern part of Ethiopia. This is an anthropological work that wants to give back its identity to a country that, in the last years, it’s been subject to investments both from Europeans and Chinese that are making important and irreversible changes. This is an in-depth analysis of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church; a unique autochthon religion of central Africa. Even though in the past years Ethiopia has been subject to many social-political dispute with European countries, like the invasion by Mussolini from 1936 until 1941, and with the adjoining countries of Somalia and Eritrea, Ethiopia has always been able to preserve its own history and religious institutions. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church became the spiritual guidance of the population. Ethiopia is one of the countries in the world with the most Cristian persecutions and, even if until a few years ago the only religion recognized by the state was the Cristian of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, nowadays the main religion are two; the Cristian and the Islamic one. The growing presence of Somali and Eritrean made Islam to diffuse quickly all over the country (around 40%), preserving though the Tigray Region as home of the Tawehado Church and where the Christian identity is still intense. This identity started many centuries ago, thanks to the meeting between the Queen of Saba and King Salomon, which brought to life the only autochthon African Cristian religion. Since 1959 the Tewahedo Church became autocephalous, dividing itself from the Copt Orthodox Church. Ethiopia represents the only case of “African” autochthon Christianity, not imported from Europe. Based on ancient tradition of direct apostolic derivation, it became a mix between the ancient Christian tradition of the East and the African reality. The Tewahedo Church is based on the Old Testament and on the Moses’ Tablets contained in the Ark of the Covenant built by Moses himself during his journey through the desert to reach the Promised Land. It’s said that Moses’ Tablets are preserved in the Church of Our Mary Lady of Zion in Axum, the religious center for the believers. The daily life of the believers is based on liturgical times. Believers pray with immense devotion everywhere, inside and outside of the churches. The prayers are so felt that it feels like a huge antique devotion, like if time is suspended. The rituality of the religious festivities is melted in the daily activities. This is the extend in which religion is present in the daily life of the believers. Young and older, men and women, they all show their own belief by preserving, generation after generation, an identity that looks like truly resisting and not changing for any reason.
